Shitty Jobs I Don't Want

In Today's LA Times, there is an article about a new weapon that the defence department is putting the finishing touches on and want to deploy in Iraq next year. It is called the V-MADS, for vehical Mounted Active Denial System. It is a Jeep mounted microwave gun.
But New Scientist magazine reported Wednesday that during tests carried out at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico, participants playing the parts of rioters were told to first remove their glasses and contact lenses to protect their eyes.

In another test, they were also told to remove metal objects such as coins in clothing to avoid local hot spots developing on their skin.
So I want to know... who were these people that played the particpiants? How much money they they get paid to stand in front of a microwave and get nasty dose of radiation?
